Is it Really Harder for Millennials to Lose Weight?

If you’ve read the papers, jumped online or glanced at your phone you’ve probably seen the headlines proclaiming “It is Harder to Lose Weight Today than in the Past.” One article from CNN offers some interesting insights which include possible reasons for this apparent earth-shattering revelation. While some of these factors need to be considered, we've already known about most of them.

The study made some fascinating observations about what factors may be contributing to this generation’s inability to lose weight as easily as their parents. While most point out that we exercise less and eat more than earlier generations there may also be some other contributing factors. In fact we’ve covered many of the factors addressed in the study in previous blogs. So as we enter the notorious holiday season this may be a good time to remind you of some basics.

Eat Right and Sleep More

Eating right for a healthier life
Very simply, the foods we eat are different from those of the past. Try to avoid processed foods and instead choose organic fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins. A good trick when dining out is to ask for a take home box at the beginning of the meal. Put half you meal into it to avoid overeating and enjoy the leftovers the next day. We have also stressed the importance of getting enough sleep. While it varies for all, make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep for you. We are creating a world that has more activity, more stress and less time to relax. Sleeping helps your body recover and encourages healthier living.

Stop Focusing on the Scale

The bottom line, your fitness level is more important than the numbers on a scale. We’re not saying to “never step on a scale again”, but quality of life is more important than a measurement of gravity. If you focus on exercising, eating right and living healthy, you will enjoy life more fully, and not be caught up in lose weight fast schemes or other unhealthy ways to shed pounds. The goal is always to be healthier.
